What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is one of a few different types of exfoliating treatments. While the idea of dermaplaning may seem a little intense, the process is incredibly easy and non-invasive.

During a dermaplaning procedure, a dermaplaning tool that resembles the scalpels surgeons use is gently brushed across the skin at a 45 degree angle. A successful session will not cut or damage the skin, but simply remove any dead skin cells and vellus hairs.

What skin concerns does dermaplaning help treat?

Common skin concerns that can be treated by dermaplaning include acne scars, facial hair removal, uneven skin tone and sun damage that appears on your skin. Additionally, dermaplaning is beneficial for all skin types and can help brighten up your complexion, leaving your dry and dull skin behind.

Who can’t have dermaplaning done?

Prior to scheduling an appointment, it is important to make sure this process will be safe and beneficial for your skin. For example, those with an active acne outbreak should refrain from participating in dermaplaning to avoid spreading the infection or further damaging the skin. Additionally, if there is any type of outbreak (eczema, psoriasis, rashes, etc) on your skin prior to your appointment, it is suggested that you reschedule until the skin condition has receded.

How does dermaplaning compare to other exfoliating skin treatments?

Since we’re living in the modern age of beauty, we are truly at a time in which we can obtain the same results through a number of available practices – dermaplaning is no different. Other skin resurfacing and exfoliating skin treatments include microdermabrasion, chemical peels, dermabrasion, and microneedling.

Overall, dermaplaning is far less invasive and time consuming than the above mentioned processes.

Dermaplaning at Lafrance Aesthetics

Once you walk into the door, you will be greeted by a welcoming professional. If there are any questions or concerns that you still have, it will be our pleasure to make sure they’re all answered prior to starting.

When you’re ready, you will be seated before we begin to cleanse the skin on your face. Next, your esthetician will begin the dermaplaning process by working on one half of your face at a time. Once the entirety of the area has been addressed, a specialized serum will be applied to ensure proper healing and hydration takes place.

Best at-home skincare tips for best results

While there are many ways to keep your skin soft and supple following your session, it is crucial to ensure that you avoid direct sunlight and harsh exfoliants for at least a week following your appointment. Additionally, keeping your skin clean and hydrated using approved products from your dermatologist or esthetician will make a huge difference. Remember: your skin is new and vulnerable – adding undue stress or strain will only hinder results.

Myths and common questions about dermaplaning

Although dermaplaning is a simple technique, it still comes with frequent misunderstandings. Below we’ve decided to cover our two most common questions regarding the dermaplaning process.

Will your hair grow back darker or thicker?

A common concern amongst clients is that the small hairs on your face will grow back darker and thicker than they were before. Fortunately, this is not the case at all. These hairs, known as vellus hairs, differ from the hairs on your head and on the rest of your body. Vellus hairs are small, fuzzy hairs that cannot grow darker or thicker than they already are, so there is no need to worry when you shave them off!

Is dermaplaning painful?

Regarding any pain you may experience, the best part about dermaplaning is that the process is totally pain free! Most clients find it a relaxing, indulgent experience.
