What is microneedling?

Microneedling Southlake

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is a treatment used to reduce or remove the appearance of multiple types of skin concerns.

A basic overview of microneedling

Microneedling is a procedure in which fine needles are used to create tiny punctures to the skin; this, in return, causes collagen production and stimulates healing. The process involves rolling a handheld tool containing multiple rows of tiny needles over the surface of the skin to create hundreds of micro-punctures, triggering an immune response that leads to new collagen formation in the treated area.

Who can have microneedling done?

The board has certified that individuals 22 years of age or older are qualified to receive microneedling treatments. Outside of that, a majority of people can get microneedling treatments. Those who have active acne, keloid scars, open cuts or infections on the face, or are pregnant or breastfeeding cannot receive microneedling. Lafrance Aesthetics requires first time clients to receive medical clearance before or the day of your appointment. This clearance is good for the rest of the year!

Your aesthetician will be able to guide you toward the right facial treatment for your skin concerns if microneedling isn’t right for you.

The benefits of microneedling treatments

Now that we have a general idea of what microneedling is and what it entails, let's look into what issues this form of therapy can assist in improving. While most commonly used for acne scarring, there’s so much more to be offered with this form of treatment.

What skin concerns does microneedling target?

Microneedling can assist in improving the look of your skin due to damage from age, the sun, or even just fine lines and wrinkles. In addition, microneedling can also assist in the reduction of the appearance of stretch marks and large pores. Since microneedling is the process of using your body's natural healing process to reduce the appearance of concerns, it doesn't matter if it’s a hyperpigmentation, a scar, or a texture issue – microneedling will improve the look after each session.

How many microneedling sessions are recommended for best results?

In reality, the number of sessions needed is directly correlated to the issue you’re trying to improve. Most concerns require around 4 sessions to see the best results. Alternatively, if you have issues like deep acne scars, more sessions will be needed to improve your skin and reach your goals.

The process of microneedling

So, we went through what microneedling is and what the primary uses for the treatment can be. Let's go through what to expect during and after an appointment so you feel confident and prepared for the day. Aftercare is important for microneedling!

How long does microneedling take?

Your microneedling appointment takes around 60 minutes to complete. This number can change based on what area or areas need to be treated, but includes prep time and guidance from your aesthetician about how to take care of your skin during the healing process.

What to expect for your microneedling session

While your aesthetician will walk you through what to expect during your appointment, it is always good to come in informed and prepared. First, your skin will be cleansed with an antibacterial solution before microneedling begins. This ensures that bacteria won't be introduced into your bloodstream during treatment and could cause an infection.

Next your practitioner will place sterilized microneedles on your skin in different directions while applying pressure with their hands or a roller device to gently puncture your skin multiple times in each area being treated. You may feel mild discomfort during this part of the microneedling session but shouldn't experience any pain or swelling afterward.

Proper aftercare tips for microneedling

Proper skin care is very important and will be discussed with you by one of our professionals after your session; however, let’s go over a few things. Avoid touching your face and applying makeup and fragranced lotions on the skin for at least 24 hours after your session. Other common things to avoid are activities that induce sweat – so working out and saunas should be avoided for at least 72 hours post microneedling.

After 72 hours your activities can resume as normal. For great results, make sure to apply skin care products that include hyaluronic acid as a key ingredient. Not only will this help the healing process but it will also promote plump, healthy, hydrated skin. Please make sure to consistently apply sunscreen to the area for at least two weeks following your sessions, as your skin will be highly sensitive to sun exposure!
